Dora Nola Tributes, Alicia Keys
I read about the interaction between Alicia Keys and Adam Levine that generated this quote in the book 'Untamed' by Glennon Doyle. (She deserves a tribute for herself!! I loved her book, love her message and her attitude! Check her out here, it's worth it) And it has stuck with me since. As most of us know, Alicia Keys has been vocal in her choice to no longer wear makeup for her TV appearances and in life in general, which in her industry was a bold choice! I love that when Adam Levine saw her putting on lipstick one day, he said "Oh I thought Alicia Keys doesn't wear makeup" and her response to him was a blunt "I do what the fuck I want"! It is pure GOLD. It's about being your true self, about being free to make your own choices and not owing an explanation or apology to anyone for the choices you make.
I will make a parallel here with being a visual artist and designer- I think it is quite easy for artists to fall in a pigeonhole with their work, their subject matter or themes. Once you've found a niche that you are comfortable and respected in, the obvious path to take is to maintain what you've got going. Don't fix it if it ain't broke they say... What if you feel like doing something else? What if suddenly, all you want to use is blue but you've always been more of on the red side? Who do you owe it to to stay in the same lane all the time? No one, that's who! Do what the fuck you want. That's really all there is to it! Thanks Alicia for inspiring me with your music, your looks, and your wise words lol
If you can't get your hands on Untamed by Glennon (but you should!), you can read about this encounter here.
Cheers,
Manuela xo
