Behind the Design - She/Her

Behind the Design - She/Her

As some of you know, the 'She/Her' pattern has a very special place in my heart. As it was the first pattern I created for Dora Nola, it set the tone for the entire collection and for the brand's story. I thought I would share with you the inspiration for this motif, which quickly became my best selling design after its launch!

OTOMI EMBROIDERY

OTOMI embroidery from Mexico has always fascinated me. I love the bold use of colour and the crisp, graphic shapes. But above all, I like the freedom that these patterns evoke. The shapes are naive, imperfect and full of life. This was important to me when I created She/Her.
The CUT-OUTS, by Henri Matisse
The later work of Henri Matisse, known as The Cut-Outs, feels to me like it could have very well been inspired by the same Otomi embroidery! Here too, there is a freedom that emanates from the deliberate, imperfect shapes which has inspired me to be more carefree with my own art. Matisse's use of colour is so specific, particular, and sometimes odd, which I love. I have sourced colour inspiration from Matisse on numerous occasions.

For a limited time, all products featuring the She/Her design are -20% off!
